AS CALUNGAS
The group As Calungas was created by professional Brazilian female percussionists who identified with the world of popular culture and its entertainment. Bloco As Calungas brought nearly 300 women to the streets, gaining notoriety and recognition in the region's music and carnival scene. The calunga represents a powerful deity of Afro-Brazilian religions who takes the form of a wooden doll in the Maracatu nations, thus representing the deep relationship with black ancestry. The group chose this symbol with the intention of seeking to confront, with strength and gentleness, the sonic, social and cultural pressure of the percussive batuque, making it possible to highlight the strength of women in representing percussion work. The flag of As Calungas is therefore the flag of social minorities, of the strengthening and memory of cultural traditions and dissemination of music produced in the State of Paraibe in Brazil.
