OS ENCANTADOS

^{Os Encantados is a documentary project by photographer Romane Iskaria dedicated to the quilombola communities of Northeastern Brazil and to the animist spirituality of the Jurema Sagrada. Through several years of research in the region, the artist explores the relationships between memory, spirituality, and territory by documenting the stories, rituals, and landscapes that shape this living heritage.

At the center of the project, Romane Iskaria created a monumental work: a collage measuring 9 meters long and 2 meters high, produced in Brazil during the Arapuca Arte Cultura residency in Paraíba. This piece brings together a series of fragments from her research conducted in the Northeast. The work combines photographs taken by the artist, archival images, excerpts from research notebooks, and soil collected in the region, forming a sensitive cartography of the memories and imaginaries connected to the Jurema Sagrada and the quilombos.

Through its scale and materiality, the collage becomes a space of montage where different temporalities intersect: personal histories, historical traces, and spiritual narratives. Fragments of images and materials intertwine to evoke the presence of the Encantados, spirits connected to the land and to the ancestors, and to make visible a collective memory often absent from official narratives.}
