Since 2024, Romane Iskaria has been developing a photographic body of work at the intersection of territorial investigation, spiritual memory, and cultural resistance in the Paraíba region of Northeast Brazil. In this series, she explores the Jurema territory, a sacred space inhabited by the Afro-Brazilian and indigenous beliefs of the "Jurema Sagrada," embodied by the Encantados, spirits who inhabit nature after death.
Iskaria chooses plaster as the medium for her images. A fragile, porous, almost bony material, it embodies the link between the visible and the invisible, between matter and spirit. Through this gesture, she gives tangible form to an intangible territory, which she recreates not as mere geography, but as a symbolic and collective space. Her photographs thus become relics, fragments of a sacred landscape that we are trying to preserve from erasure.
The Land of Jurema, according to writer Sandro Guimarães de Salles in his book In the Shadow of the Enchanted Jurema, is a place of spiritual importance where the veil between worlds is porous. The author lists ten sacred sites in the Nordeste region, which he calls "invisible cities", points of contact between the physical and spiritual worlds, which Romane Iskaria explores and documents with attentive sensitivity.
In a context where these communities are often deprived of their right to name and locate themselves, The Land of Jurema acts as an act of poetic and political reparation. Through photography, Romane Iskaria questions the very nature of territory: can it be captured, transmitted, and shared without being distorted? Can we represent what escapes the map, what resists official borders?
